Getting customers’ orders manufactured and shipped out on time is vital, but the process includes many more steps and touches than the consumer might realize. We did just that, consolidating data from back-office systems and optimizing work order generation, offering precision in production and logistics.
Challenge
- Help the client streamline order scheduling to the shop floor
- Create a system to track shop floor results, including monitoring real-time results from PLCs
- Ensure both applications work across multiple plants in different time zones
Solution
- Accessed sales orders from the back-office system via an API
- Read bill of materials for each sales order from another API
- Accessed shop floor results, including the production history of each part in the bill of material, from a different API
- Consolidated all the data to provide the scheduler with a streamlined process for generating work orders for the shop floor
- Included the ability to schedule a sales order for one plant across multiple plants, factoring in necessary lead times to allow transportation of completed parts to another plant, where final assembly occurs
Results
- Reduced the time required to schedule orders
- Improved on-time completion of customer orders
- Incorporated service orders and replacement parts into the work orders process
- Integrated PLCs to provide a real-time graphic representation to operators of the volume of material consumed, significantly reducing scrap quantity for parts that fall outside allowed QA parameters
- Provided operators with graphical work instructions for each product and sent production results to the scheduling system, where the information is factored into part history to continue to improve the work order creation process
